Drama, Suspense/Thriller

Director Rupert Wyatt's remake of the 1974 original doubles down on narrative bets until it goes bust. Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) is a self-loathing author and professor whose life is in shambles due to his gambling addiction, which gets him mixed up with loan sharks and other shady characters. The supporting cast is riveting: John Goodman and Jessica Lange haven't had roles this meaty in years. But the film rises and falls with Wahlberg, whose irritating interpretation makes Jim both unlikeable and inscrutable. He's supposed to be a mess, but Wahlberg (as usual) can't help but also play him as a cool con man. A climactic grift makes you wonder if Jim had more self-control than previously suggested, undermining much of the character development.
