THE FOREIGN EXCHANGE

CAT'S CRADLE, CARRBORO | SATURDAY, NOV. 7

"If you think it's expensive to hire professionals, wait until you hire amateurs," says Phonte Coleman, one-half of the soul-groove unit The Foreign Exchange, in the new tour documentary, Suite Sessions. He's right: Trained, formulaic hitmakers charge costly bundles of cash, but music newbies are a waste of bread altogether. On the cover of The Foreign Exchange's sixth and most recent album, Tales from the Land of Milk and Honey, Coleman makes a point to highlight the ripe recording professionals who balance him vocally if not fiscally, Carmen Rodgers and Shana Tucker. Grown out of Connected, twisted out of Leave It All Behind and salvaged out of 2013's Love in Flying Colors, Milk and Honey is a straight-up dance album, from the Talking Heads-inspired jiggle "Asking For a Friend" to the piece of Slave's "Watching You" heard during "Work It to the Top." That's appropriate, as Phonte's '80s obsessions might be the best thing about The Foreign Exchange's indulgent, lovable and professional live shows. 9 p.m., $25–$30, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, www.catscradle.com.Eric Tullis
