The Fly Room

When: Thu., Oct. 1, 7 p.m. 2015
Price: free

NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF NATURAL SCIENCES—Scientist and filmmaker Alexis Gambis was a student at The Rockefeller University in New York City when he became interested in the famed laboratory at Columbia University where Calvin Bridges, studying fruit flies in the early 1900s, helped uncover the laws of heredity that laid the groundwork for the modern understanding of genetics. As Gambis began research for a feature film about the lab, he discovered that Bridges' daughter, Betsey, was still alive and living in Asheville, North Carolina, and The Fly Room shifted to be told from her perspective. The film covers two days she spent, as a child, in her father's lab, which has been meticulously re-created for the film. This allows for an emotional dimension in what could otherwise have been a simple docudrama about an important scientific discovery. At this free screening, Gambis will be present to introduce his film and answer questions afterward. 7 p.m., free, 11 W. Jones St., Raleigh, 919-707-9800, —Brian Howe
