Action/Adventure, Comedy

An action-comedy that fails to deliver much in either genre, The Family is the latest film from hit-and-miss director Luc Besson (The Professional). Robert De Niro stars as Giovanni Manzoni, an ex-Mafioso living under the U.S. federal witness protection program's protection. His family, featuring Michelle Pfeiffer as his wife, has barely unpacked their bags in Normandy before they begin making waves in the new neighborhood and with their FBI handler (a check-cashing Tommy Lee Jones). While the film has its comedic moments, it's the latest in a troubling series of movies this year to play a scene of attempted sexual assault for laughs. A surprisingly strong turn by De Niro and the young actors playing his children (Glee's Dianna Agron and John D'Leo) are not enough to overcome the lazy direction, and cannot salvage what in the end amounts to a low-rent In Bruges.

Director: Luc Besson
