This grimy story based on a Dennis Lehane screenplay shifts from Lehane's usual Boston setting to Brooklyn, where the old crime crews have been supplanted by ruthless foreign influences. Bob (Tom Hardy) once ran the streets with his cousin Marv (the late James Gandolfini, sensational), but now he tends a "drop bar," a drop point for mob money. The bar's Chechen gangster owners become suspicious when two masked robbers empty the register one night. Meanwhile, Bob adopts a pitbull puppy he finds in a dumpster outside the home of Nadia (Noomi Rapace), crossing paths with Eric (Matthias Schoenaerts), the dog's owner and Nadia's psychotic ex. The plot dodders along without mustering much momentum. What makes the film worth watching is the lead actors; Hardy fashions his man-child into a mesmerizing performance.

Director: Michael Roskam
Writer: Dennis Lehane
Cast: Tom Hardy, Noomi Rapace, James Gandolfini, Matthias Schoenaerts, John Ortiz, Ann Dowd and James Frecheville
