The Draughtsman's Contract

When: Sun., Aug. 12, 7 p.m. 2012
Price: $2

Peter Greenaway emerged as a writer and director in 1982 with this twist upon the classic drama of manners on a sunny British estate. A cocky (in every definition of the word) young artist (Anthony Higgins) arrives to draw a set of landscapes, beginning a not entirely desired affair with the manor's matriarch (Janet Suzman), whose husband is absent. Within the artist's drawings, clues appear that seem to point to the husband's murder. When the husband's body is fished out of the moat, the machineries of idyllic manor life go well out of whack. Shot on location at Groombridge Place in Kent, the film shows an early stage of development of Greenaway's now-trademark mise-en-scène—painterly landscapes and interiors that, in later films, aspire to compete with those of Renaissance masters. In The Draughtsman's Contract, Greenaway unfurls intrigue from the artist's tenet: "Draw what you see, not what you know." Cinema, Inc., which presents the 7 p.m. screening, is a $20 season subscription series, but tickets for this final film of the current season are being made available for just $2. —Chris Vitiello
