The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie

When: Sun., Feb. 10, 7 p.m. 2013
Price: $20 (season ticket)

Luis Buñuel is one of those rare artists who found widespread commercial success while remaining a visionary and genuinely weird experimenter within his medium. Famed in the art world as a surrealist master of both narrative and image, Buñuel collaborated with Salvador Dali on the 1929 Un Chien Andalou, which opens with one of the most referenced moments in cinema—a knife cutting into an eyeball. Less visceral, The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie was perhaps his most commercially successful film, winning the 1972 Oscar for Best Foreign Film. But it might also be his most subversive work. The often hilarious story presents a group of well-to-do friends who try unsuccessfully and repeatedly to have a nice meal together, but events always conspire to foil them. Their dreams also emerge among the absurd mishaps. Buñuel critiques the ridiculous falseness of bourgeois society but also rips open neorealist cinema to let the poetry out. In French, with subtitles. The screening starts at 7 p.m.; a $20 Cinema, Inc. subscription gets you in to this film and all others in the series' current season. —Chris Vitiello
