The Devil Makes Three

The Devil Makes Three, Phillip Roebuck

When: Wed., Jan. 9, 8:30 p.m. 2013
Price: $15-17

Santa Cruz string trio The Devil Makes Three's woozy roots-noir recalls the energetic elegance of Murder by Death. What frontman Peter Bernhard's wheedling baritone lacks in character, he makes up for in showmanship. Half Waits-ian barker, half ragtime-folk narrator, Bernhard lures listeners into canny rave-ups. The Devil Makes Three are equal-opportunity thieves, lifting from bluegrass, folk/blues, jazz and rockabilly with unassuming aplomb. Formed a decade ago, they've released four rollicking albums and 2011's live disc, Stomp and Smash. They've gained real momentum during the last few years. The $15–$17 show costs 8:30 p.m. —Chris Parker
