THE DEPARTMENT OF IMPROVISED DANCE: STATIONS

FRIDAY, OCT. 9–SATURDAY, OCT. 10, DURHAM

DURABLE DURHAM WAREHOUSE—Durham Independent Dance Artists launches its second season with what it does best: spontaneity and surprise. Almost nothing is certain about the debut performance from the Department of Improvised Dance, featuring DIDA co-founders Leah Wilks and Nicola Bullock with Matthew Young, who have been practicing contact improv together, behind the scenes, for nearly two years. It will be the audience's first time at the venue, a new warehouse space (not wheelchair accessible) with a lengthy past on Ramseur Street. It's named in honor of its former function, circa 1920, as Durable Durham Hosiery. The performers won't have heard Adam Lindquist's sound design or seen Benjamin Reid's sculpture, one of several "stations" they'll interact with on the fly. The stations are the only constant; the movement is improvised anew in each show. All that's certain is the strength of the performers and the promise of a typically unique DIDA experience. 7 and 9 p.m., $10 suggested donation, 809 Ramseur St., Durham, www.didaseason.com. —Brian Howe
