The Color Exchange, Hotline, Breakers (Back Room)

When: Sat., Aug. 22, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $5-$7
Both Hotline and The Color Exchange are in the process of establishing a new identity. Hotline began as Oulipo, a knotty and discursive electronic outfit prone to Animal Collective-like sprees; as Hotline, though, they’ve pulled the songs inward and attempted to push the draw outward, with a mix of sultry R&B working to lure in the listeners. Meanwhile, as Clockwork Kids, Justin Ellis and Chris Petto pursued a bracing version of sharp disco punk, à la the Editors. But as The Color Exchange, they’ve mellowed and stretched, adding some thoughtfulness and textures they’ve borrowed from Radiohead and an American indie bent that nods to Spoon and Cold War Kids. —Grayson Haver Currin
