The Cloud in the Compass

When: Sat., March 19, 1-4 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

Last year, Duke's Program in the Arts of the Moving Image brought in David Gatten to be a visiting artist. He's been teaching classes while continuing to produce and occasionally screen his sui generis non-narrative films, which lately reflect his fascination with esoteric texts from the library of William Byrd II, an 18th-century Virginia aristocrat and man of letters. Gatten's recent film, So Sure of Nowhere Buying Times to Come, which venerates the wares of a little antique shop in a remote Colorado town, was commissioned by Mark McElhatten, who curates avant-garde film for the New York Film Festival and Lincoln Center. Today McElhatten is bringing a program of short films, called The Cloud in the Compass, to the Nasher. The seven films, made between 1966 and 2008, promise to gladden the hearts of experimental-film lovers. "Expect the unexpected, the achingly beautiful, and the darkly unforgettable," writes Stan Abe, director of the Program in the Arts of the Moving Image. The free screening runs 1–4 p.m. —Marc Maximov
