The Church

When: Thu., April 29, 8 p.m. 2010
Price: $25 in advance, $35 at the door

The Church emerged as Australia's answer to America's Paisley Underground, releasing their debut in 1981. Chiming guitars swirled in a waterspout of atmospheric pastels over the steady thrum of high-hat and snare. Though they've never replicated the worldwide success of "Under the Milky Way," they've maintained a consistent pace without diminishing their considerable charms. Indeed, last year's Untitled #23 is among the finest recordings The Church has ever made. Steve Kilbey's airy tenor croon still presides with plaintive beauty, but the psychedelic vibe's even deeper now, channeling the dreamy drift of Meddle-era Pink Floyd. Those attending this 30th anniversary acoustic performance receive an EP featuring recently cut tracks. It'll cost you, though: See —Chris Parker
