"What this generation is trying to do," jazz trumpeter Christian Scott said in a May interview with The Times-Picayune, "is re-acculturate all of the different vernaculars that have grown out of jazz in the last 100 years and collapse all those things back into a cohesive sound." That says a lot about Scott's unrestricted approach to his own jazz, dubbed by peers as "stretch music." Scott's New Orleans roots steeped him in the traditions of marching bands, blues and bounce, enabling him to twist the form in exciting ways and extend its shelf life, too. On his custom-made horn and with equal parts spiritual and sonic authority, Scott's "whisper technique" adds dark intrigue to songs like "Kiel" or "Liar Liar" and surfs over chaos during "K.K.P.D." During April's second Art of Cool Festival, he proved he's not powerless without his weapon of choice, as he and his wife, Isadora, acted as the event's class-act co-hosts. For that occasion, he was an ambassador to the musical vernaculars he has sucked into his own repertoire; for his return to Durham, Scott rebroadcasts that repertoire, using his own brass cannon to compete with the holiday weekend's fireworks overhead. 7, 9 and 11 p.m., $25, 335 W. Main St., Durham, 919-683-1058, Tullis
