It's homecoming week at PlayMakers Rep. Playwright Bekah Brunstetter, a UNC grad who's now a writer and producer for This Is Us, and former associate artistic director Jeffrey Meanza return to Chapel Hill to stage The Cake a month after its premiere in Los Angeles. Brunstetter's play is based on the 2012 controversy, now before the Supreme Court, in which a Colorado chef refused to bake a gay wedding cake. But Brunstetter moves it to her native North Carolina: Della, a conservative Winston-Salem baker who helped raise her friend's daughter, now confronts her upcoming marriage to another woman, forcing Della to reexamine her long-held beliefs. The playwright has said she wants her work to humanize conservative values and resist our current tendencies to oversimplify or demonize opposing views. Stage veteran Julia Gibson and newcomer Jenny Latimer star. —Byron Woods
