The Bronzed Chorus, Nigredo

When: Thu., July 15, 10 p.m. 2010
Price: Free

Last decade's waves of post-rock held Mogwai and Godspeed sacred and referenced Radiohead-style shimmer and clarity. It may not be fair, then, to call a recent crop of bands, including Atlanta's Nigredo, by that title. In their pantheon are dark, moody bands like Isis. Yes, the material is still epic with heavy emotional overtones, but the focus on triumph is gone. Nigredo tends toward a balance of punishing, mid-tempo crunch and disquieting ambience. Their ghostly guitar phrases build to plaintive howls, and they command vivid imagery without resorting to vocals. Greensboro's consistently great The Bronzed Chorus headlines. Corbie Hill
