"Free your jazz and your Afropop will follow" could be the slogan of The Brand New Life, a band that formed from high school experiments in Greensboro. Fresh off a road tour of the Deep South, their sound is greased up and ready to groove at Golden Belt's GB Live summer concert series. A thicket of horns and percussion set the tone; the way Durham's Will Darity, a recent add to the group, gets his electric guitar to "talk" is an oddly perfect foil for Evan Frierson's West African talking drum. —Sylvia Pfeiffenberger
