A pleasant departure from typical kids movie territory, this film is themed around Mexico’s Day of the Dead and explores the lighter side of passing on. To save his true love Maria (Zoe Saldana), our hero Manolo (Diego Luna) must travel to the surprisingly festive Land of the Remembered and the markedly less cheery Land of the Forgotten. The 3-D visuals are a blast—a rolling explosion of vibrant colors and bizarro character design, especially in the fantastic realms of underworld deities La Muerta (Kate del Castillo) and Xibalba (Ron Perlman). Unfortunately, exuberant mythmaking is undercut by clumsy efforts to make the film more marketable—dumbed-down pop culture riffing and some familiar radio songs, delivered with a halfhearted Latin twist. Too bad.
