Lauren is something of a shapeshifter. She's a performance artist who takes on and manifests the bodies of others in uncanny presentations around the world. But her unique relationship with interpersonal boundaries will be challenged when an enigmatic, neuro-atypical figure subjects her to an unexpected analog of her work: exact, pitch-perfect, but randomly sorted renderings of her last conversations with her dead husband, Rey. The New York Times called Don DeLillo's spare 2001 novella a "metaphysical ghost story." Still, it's sometimes hard to determine who's haunting whom in this meditation on the evanescence of perception, the permanence of loss, and all that lies beyond the permeable borders of the self. Jody McAuliffe directs guest artists Rachel Jett and Tavish Miller in the world premiere of her stage adaptation of the book, a Duke Theater Studies production presented by Duke Performances. —Byron Woods
