The Big Sleep

When: Fri., Nov. 2, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

We here at Indy Week challenge our readers to go see The Big Sleep and do the one thing we still can't do after all these years of repeat viewings: figure out the damn story. Howard Hawks' revered 1946 adaptation of Raymond Chandler's equally revered 1939 detective novel is known for many things—among them, giving Humphrey Bogart yet another iconic private eye role, as prized Chandler creation Philip Marlowe. But it's also infamous for having a convoluted plot that Hawks, the powerhouse screenwriting trio of Leigh Brackett, Jules Furthman and William Faulkner, and even Chandler himself couldn't make heads or tails of. And yet, even with its damn near indecipherable narrative, it's still one of the more entertaining crime yarns of the film noir era, thanks mostly to the chemistry between Bogart and the movie's resident femme fatale, his on-screen/ off-screen partner Lauren Bacall. Indy Week contributor and NCMA curator Laura Boyes will tell you more about the film in her introduction. —Craig D. Lindsey
