The Best of Enemies

When: Wednesdays-Saturdays, 8:15 p.m. and Sundays. Continues through Sept. 27 2014

Last December, Manbites Dog's five-star production of The Best of Enemies confronted sold-out houses with local history up close, warts and all. The stage adaptation of Osha Gray Davidson's non-fiction bestseller zeroes in on the racial unrest that divided Durham in the 1970s—and the most unlikely partnership and friendship between C.P. Ellis, then the Exalted Cyclops of the local Ku Klux Klan, and "Roughhouse Annie" Atwater, a hard-nosed African-American civil rights activist. Derrick Ivey and Lakeisha Coffey anchored that production with two of the year's strongest regional performances, with able support from Elisabeth Lewis Corley and Thaddaeus Edwards. All return in this production, abetted by startling historical audiovisual evidence collected by designers Jon Haas and Alex Maness; Joseph Megel directs. —Byron Woods
