Other than George Clinton, no member of Parliament-Funkadelic was more crucial than Bernie Worrell. His lithe keyboards kept the band's vigorous grooves from cramping, and he helped arrange almost all of the material from the group's '70s heyday. Those booming synth lines on "Flash Light"? Yup, that's him. His eight-piece "orchestra" captures his touch for funky energy better than most of the solo projects he's pursued since he left P-Funk in the early '80s. Worrell's keys shift through a kaleidoscope of textures but hinge on terse melodies, a mooring for the band's rhythmic energy. —Jordan Lawrence
