The Beast

When: Fri., July 3, 5:30 p.m. 2015
Price: free
Late last week at CAM Raleigh, Pierce Freelon, the emcee of Durham’s hip-hop and jazz-fusion quartet The Beast, served as the speaker in a CreativeMornings presentation on the theme of “Revolution.” For the next two weeks, he’ll take part in a cultural revolution of sorts in the Democratic Republic of Congo as an artist-in-residence at the Yolé!Africa center. Tim Smith will stand in for him as his band headlines NCMA’s weekly Art in the Evening concert series for the second time in two months. You can attribute most of this institutional acceptance—museums, international classes, lectures—to the art-plus-activism formula The Beast has pursued through its music. It’s not safe. It’s just smart. —Eric Tullis
