The Beast

When: Fri., April 17, 5:30 p.m. 2015
The Beast’s jazz pianist, Eric Hirsh, splits his time between salsa acts and evolving as a scholarly practitioner of Cuban music. Bandmate Pierce Freelon, meanwhile, divides his days as the Beat Making Lab boss, UNC professor and co-creator of the recent cross-cultural performance Cristo Negro | Diablo Blanco. Given how busy they are, you may presume they treat their beloved hip-hop exploration, The Beast, like an unrehearsed side item. They don’t, but if they did, you might not be able to tell once Freelon turns on his crowd-friendly charms. —Eric Tullis
