The Bar-Kays

When: Sun., Aug. 31, 8 p.m. 2014
Price: Free
Calling The Bar-Kays "soul survivors" is a tawdry move, yes, as most of the original band died in a 1967 airplane crash. But nearly 50 years later, the term holds. They began as instrumentalists and became Otis Redding's backing band after "Soul Finger" climbed the pop charts. After all but two members died in the disaster that killed Redding, The Bar-Kays rebuilt, backing such classics as Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul. Much of their career has remained overshadowed by others, even while devoted fans helped push songs such as "Son of Shaft," "Holy Ghost," "Sexomatic" and "Freak Show on the Dance Floor" up R&B charts. Still, they funk on, releasing Grown Folks in 2012. That five-song mix of throwback soul and modern production includes cameos from George Clinton, 8 Ball and DJ Paul. Their stage show even exceeds their studio prowess. This headlining set is part of the two-day African-American Cultural Festival, which includes performances from Phoenix Lei, Kim Arrington and more. —Curt Fields
