The Apartment

When: Fri., Jan. 6, 8 p.m. 2012
Price: $5 ($3.50 for members)

"Shut up and deal." That's Shirley MacLaine's sweet and worldly final line of Billy Wilder's hilarious classic movie The Apartment, which kicks off the NCMA's "Mad About Mad Men" Winter-Spring Film Series. Winner of the Best Picture Oscar in 1960, the film also stars Jack Lemmon—who had just cracked up audiences in Wilder's Some Like It Hot—and Fred MacMurray. Lemmon is stuck on the lowest rung at his Manhattan insurance company but begins a precipitous climb when he loans out his apartment to executives for their extramarital trysts. Elevator girl MacLaine is the apple of Lemmon's eye, but hijinks ensue when she turns out to be the arm candy of his company's director (MacMurray) as well. Half the laughs are at the hilarity of the snowballing circumstances, but the other half are darker. This is the first of 17 films in the series between now and May, including La Dolce Vita, Butterfield 8, The Ipcress File, Masculin Féminin (introduced by Indy culture editor David Fellerath) and an A/V Geeks evening of 16mm madness. Tickets to the 8 p.m. screening in the East Building auditorium are $5, or $3.50 for museum members, students and Cinema Inc. and Galaxy Cinema members. —Chris Vitiello
