Comedy, Drama

For nearly two decades, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty have been one of the most productive director-writer teams in world cinema. In addition to such heavyweights as Palme d'Or winner The Wind That Shakes the Barley, they've produced a number of lighter stories that could be called comedies, including the 2009 film Looking for Eric and their latest, The Angels' Share. The new film is a story of a group of adult delinquents who discover a love for fine Scottish whisky—a national heritage that is utterly unfamiliar to them. The leader of these hooligans is Robbie, an ex-con who's struggling to escape a sordid, violent past in order to make a life with his girlfriend and their new baby. The aspirations are tender and sentimental, but the ever-present threat of violence that punctuates the story keeps the film from descending into treacle. The Scottish brogue is nearly unintelligible, but thankfully the film's subtitles make certain we don't miss the wonderfully strange profanity.
