When: Feb. 20-March 14 2015

THE AMERICAN TOBACCO FACTORY:

A REFORMATION OF A FACTORY AND A CITY | FRIDAY, FEB. 20, DURHAM

THROUGH THIS LENS—Upon hearing about plans for the renovation of Durham's historic American Tobacco Factory (former home of Bull Durham Smoking Tobacco, derelict since the 1980s), Chapel Hill photographer Michael Rosenberg thought it would make a compelling subject. He obtained access and, for more than six years, photographed the grounds and the renovation. He quickly learned that the buildings contained a deteriorating power; a reminder of the generations of people who earned their livelihoods producing a deadly product. His stark black-and-white images, some collected in the book Transition: The American Tobacco Factory, capture a changing Durham, enshrining the past as the future bears down. Following this opening reception, where the artist will be present, the show remains on display through March 14. 6 p.m., free,
