Romance, SciFi/Fantasy

There are heady issues bandied about in this loose adaptation of Philip K. Dick's 1954 short story, "Adjustment Team." An unseen, omnipotent and conspicuously ecumenical "Chairman" dispatches his band of "adjusters" to steer the course of human events. Here, they have big plans for David Norris (Matt Damon), a charismatic Congressman, which do not include love interest Elise (Emily Blunt), a beguiling beauty and aspiring dancer. Tonal inconsistencies and plot holes abound, even discounting the script's science fiction context. And, the filmmakers try to amp up the script with chase sequences involving cars, doorway portals and a stairway that leads nowhere—except to a finale that feels curiously like the product of test-audience pandering. That said, a prevailing Ernst Lubitsch touch nicely partners with the chemistry between Damon and Blunt, who gives her best performance since The Devil Wears Prada.
