The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee

When: April 24-May 5 2013
Price: $22-30

As a former county spelling bee competitor and a devotee of the Scripps National Spelling Bee annually broadcast on ESPN2, I can attest that bees are filled with weirdos and overachievers, as well as tales of heartbreak, hard work and triumph. The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee opens this year's Hot Summer Nights theatrical series presented by Theatre Raleigh, taking the natural comedy and angst of spelling bees and puberty and translating them to Tony Award-winning musical form. Featuring contestants such as demure Olive Ostrovsky, sinus-challenged William Barfee and lisping Logainne Schwarzandgrubenierre—as well as four "lucky" audience volunteers—this musical champions both logophiles and losers. —Emma Miller
