This is a homecoming concert of sorts for trombonist Terry Hsieh. Hsieh is originally from Durham but moved to Beijing after graduating from Oberlin Conservatory. Hsieh’s sound is big and round, in the tradition of trombonists like J. J. Johnson and Jimmy Knepper. For this show, he brings together some of the Triangle’s finest—trumpeter Al Strong, guitarist Russell Favret, bassist Kenny Phelps-McKeown, and drummer Mike Ode—for two sets of hard-charging bebop. —Dan Ruccia
