Terry Anderson's Birthday Extravaganza with The Olympic Ass Kickin' Team

When: Sun., Dec. 25, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $7

For Terry Anderson, Christmas is a double whammy of holiday festivities and birthday fun—except it hasn't always been such an even celebration. The rocker, who has been throwing down badass jams in these parts for at least 30 years, spent most of his life with only extra presents to show for his big day.

"I had never had a birthday party my whole life. I maybe had one or two birthday cakes," says Anderson. Exactly 11 years ago, he decided it had been long enough. "I [thought], 'You know, everybody gets tired of hanging around with Grandma and hanging around with the kids.' I figured Christmas night would be the perfect night to get everybody out." Every year since, Anderson and his Olympic Ass-Kickin Team have culled together a power pop, roots rock show worthy of a spot on Santa's nice list.

This year, the band has a new batch of songs to play. The new record, More Smooth Jazz and Sweet Sweet Jams, may not sound like what you'd expect to hear from a bunch of ass-kicking rockers, but Anderson swears, "The new record is my favorite record that we've put out."

Still, these aren't your typical tunes, partially because Anderson wrote them in an unconventional way. "A fan of mine sent me a ukulele and I wrote like more than half the songs on [it]," he says, adding, "we rocked them up and they're really stupid and fun." Pay $7 at 8 p.m. You don't want to disappoint Anderson on his birthday, do you? —Ashley Melzer
