Tennis, La Sera, Holiday Shores

When: Mon., March 7, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $10

La Sera's jangly, slightly mysterious debut record comes from an unexpected source. Songwriter and vocalist Katy Goodman is best-known as a member of the Vivian Girls, with whom her bass work inhabits a trebly, lo-fi world that doesn't do her singing justice. While lo-fi may be a passing fad, the La Sera record implies creative longevity for this young Brooklyn musician. Goodman's voice, delicate and nuanced, threads through '60s-referencing folky but poppy psychedelia. Her spectral vocals add an ethereal quality that sets this project apart from the more familiar, heavy-handed styles of psych-pop acts such as the Dandy Warhols. Opener Holiday Shores' reverb-thick beach rock mixes messy, overstimulating instrumentation with disaffected vocals, while Tennis—Colorado yacht rock with a sentimental streak a nautical mile wide—headlines. —Corbie Hill
