The Tender Fruit

Tender Fruit, Brett Harris

When: Thu., July 14, 10 p.m. 2011
Price: Free

That the Tender Fruit has yet to be noticed nationally continues to baffle the faithful, but in the meantime we get to hear Christy Smith's heartbreaking and beautiful folk stylings at free club shows like this. Smith's voice, among the loveliest in the state, is the star: Warm, warbling and richly Southern, it brings the grace and fire of country queens such as Loretta Lynn and Dolly Parton to updated folk anthems. Tattered acoustic guitar and shuffling rhythms abound, mirroring the loneliness and loss of her lovesick hymns. Catchy, tuneful songwriter Brett Harris opens. The free show starts at 10 p.m. —Jordan Lawrence
