Re: “Iraqi journalist Ahmed Fadaam

I don't know if I agree that we're creating a generation of American-haters. I spent a year (2007) as a US Army soldier in Iraq, and I got the impression that the kids loved us. They were always running outside and smiling and waving when we drove by, and constantly talking to us when we were dismounted (we did our best to converse with our barebones Arabic).

One time, we were pulling security on a street where an IED had gone off, bursting a water main and flooding part of the street. We were out there forever, and most of the neighborhood was out there too. I was at one end of the street, and I asked my friend, "indek chigara?" Do you have a cigarette? But he had just smoked his last one. Then a little girl nearby took off running and came back a few minutes later holding a cigarette for me. It was just about the cutest thing I've ever seen.

Heartwarming stories aside, I really got the impression that the kids liked us. We were always nice to them, and I think most American soldiers were the same way. Of course, I only knew about my tiny little slice of the country, and I'm certainly aware that there were exceptions to the jovial relationship we had with the children. I also come from a different angle here, as I can't speak to the difficult chats that parents must have with their children about why the Americans are there. Still, I can't imagine that most of the kids I interacted with over there would grow up with negative feelings towards us.
