It wasn't a conventional graphic novel that Canadian writer and cartoonist Sarah Leavitt published in 2010. Tangles: A Story About Alzheimer's, My Mother and Me, was actually a visual and overtly poetic memoir of her and her family's experiences during the slow decline of her mother, Midge, in the 1990s. In March, director Rachel Klem and writer-performer Tamara Kissane began convening a group of 13 local women from a number of disciplines to consider Leavitt's work—and to fashion a response.

That group, dubbed the Summer Sisters, presents its findings this weekend in three experimental, multimedia performances. Through adapted and original songs, scenes and movement, the group has devised what choreographer Nicola Bullock calls "a very female-centered, female-driven understanding of the processes of aging, sickness and death." With this leadership and an ensemble including Susannah Hough, Laurie Wolf, Laurie Siegel and Dierdre Shipman, prepare to go deep. —Byron Woods
