Comedy, Drama

Imagine if the directors of Crank made a long Key & Peele skit and you have imagined Sean S. Baker's Tangerine. It centers on transgender sex workers Sin-Dee (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez) and Alexandra (Mya Taylor) as they tear through LA on Christmas Eve. Alexandra tells a fresh-out-of-jail Sin-Dee that her pimp/drug-dealer boyfriend (James Ransone) has been cheating on her. Sin-Dee goes on the warpath as she tracks down the "fish" who's been creeping with her man. Although the movie is set in the seedy underbelly of LA, mostly everything is played for laughs. It reaches screwball heights in a hilariously profane last half-hour, when Sin-Dee confronts her boyfriend and his side action at a donut shop. Baker used iPhones to shoot the film, and it works for a kinetic slice-of-life production such as this. It's an offbeat Christmas story for unsentimental people to watch during the holidays.
