Tallahassee, Anna Rose Beck, Bears of Blue River

When: Thu., June 30, 9 p.m. 2011
Price: $5

Brian Barthelmes, frontman for Boston folk-rock outfit Tallahassee, was once an offensive lineman in the National Football League. His burly, bearded appearance backs it up; his voice does not. High, whistling and smooth as a shot of honey, it's a great fit for Tallahassee's economic attack. Rambling along on upright bass and minimal electric guitar, Barthelmes' bandmates propel his songs down familiar folk pathways. But in this battle of Americana voices, Anna Rose Beck takes the night. The Durham songstress combines hypnotic picking with a full, breezy croon. The Bears of Blue River open. —Jordan Lawrence
