Comedy, Drama

Set in 1988 and shot in 2007, this film attempts to mold a John Hughes-esque narrative into a study of Gen Y's stunted efforts at adulthood. Topher Grace plays Matt Franklin, an MIT graduate who returns home with no job plans other than a summer stint at the local mall's Suncoast Video. Matt's plan is shaken when his high school crush, Tori Frederking (Teresa Palmer), invites him to a raucous Labor Day party. What follows is a beery, coke-y tale of romantic-fulfillment that doesn't color outside the lines enough to be interesting. The film takes a huge risk in manipulating 1980s nostalgia to deliver a thoroughly modern character crisis and its main misstep is using the filters of past eras' teen films (American Graffiti, Can't Hardly Wait) as a template to deliver an analysis of 20-something youth culture.
