We know about the classic wolves of the American West, so mythologized by Jack London even as they were being systematically eradicated. Despite the notorious helicopter culls, the gray wolf of the West has a toehold on survival. In eastern North Carolina, a much more recent recovery attempt is under way to bolster the numbers of the red wolf. T. DeLene Beeland, in her book The Secret World of Red Wolves, written for UNC Press, details thosee efforts and includes a generous sampling of photos.—David Fellerath
