FLAMENCO VIVO CARLOTA SANTANA: THE PASSION OF FLAMENCO

MOTORCO MUSIC HALL, DURHAM

FRIDAY, FEB. 27–SUNDAY, MAR. 1

In recent seasons, local dance presenters have honed their cutting edge by staging shows in non-traditional venues. But when it comes to flamenco dance and music—that soul-stirring but somehow austere mingling of the darkest passions and human dignity—the move represents a return to the roots of the art form. Flamenco came of age not in theaters or concert halls, but in the tablaos of Spain—the café/cabarets where cantaores would sing of the heart's disasters to the turbulent strains of a solo guitar. World-renowned dance company Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana brings tablao flamenco to Motorco as part of a residency and symposium with the Duke Dance Program (see its website for further, on-campus events). Two musicians and five dancers, including Associate Artistic Director Antonio Hidalgo, enact the drama of flamenco tableside, up close and personal. Having savored this company in conventional theaters (including a recent Duke Performances show), we think its impact at point-blank range should be intense. 8 p.m. Fri.–Sat.; 7 p.m. Sun., $10–$30, 723 Rigsbee Ave., Durham, 919-901-0875,
