Sweet Tea and Baby Dreams

When: Aug. 3-5, 8 p.m. and Sun., Aug. 6, 3 p.m. 2017
Price: $10

The Southern auxiliaries, garden clubs, Jaycettes, and ladies who lunch would like to make it known that ours is still the land of gracious living. So the baby shower Mama Jubilee is planning to host for her doting daughter, Maggie, will be a serene pageant of decorum and taste, plus, thoughtful (and pricey) presents. It will not be a venue for untested recipes, escalating intra-cousin feuds, alcoholic fits of distemper or, worst of all, smug northerners. Playwright Maribeth McCarthy, who has apparently been to a few of these affairs herself, directs this fly-on-the-wall comedy, in which a genteel Southern social event inexorably skids toward total chaos, in the Women's Theatre Festival's comedy-based summer season. —Byron Woods
