Sweet Smell of Success

When: Fri., March 18, 8 p.m. 2011
Price: $5 ($3.50 for students)

"I'd hate to take a bite outta you—you're a cookie full of arsenic." Few movies are more quotable than 1957's Sweet Smell of Success, recently rereleased on a Criterion Collection DVD. Clifford Odets and Ernest Lehman's scathing screenplay (from Lehman's novella) contains bons mot so acidic it's a miracle the film doesn't melt the projector (in 1982's Diner, one character walks around reciting lines from the film). Wonderfully directed by Alexander Mackendrick, it's a noirish satire of press types such as Walter Winchell, with a never-better Tony Curtis as sleazy press agent Sidney Falco, who's forced by the more-evil gossip columnist J.J. Hunsecker (Burt Lancaster in one of his best roles) into intervening in the romance of Hunsecker's sister to keep his clients in Hunsecker's influential column. Dark, moody and utterly cynical to the core, the film flopped at the box office but has since become a classic, even spawning a stage musical. Come see what all the fuss was about—or quote a few of your favorite lines back at the screen—when the film screens at 8 p.m. Tickets are $5, or $3.50 for members of the museum, Cinema, Inc. or Galaxy Cinema. Independent contributor Laura Boyes curates this series. —Zack Smith
