Swans, Little Annie

When: Fri., March 27, 9 p.m. 2015
Price: $18-$20

The current iteration of Swans—a six-piece that surrounds bandleader Michael Gira with a squadron of percussion, guitars and volume—is now one of the most powerful live bands on the planet. With sets that often push past the two-hour mark and a sexagenarian frontman who sweats, screams and scowls at the lip of the stage, Swans suggest a militant mutation on Springsteen-ian excess, turning welcoming odes to the little man into plangent tirades against the great big world. Gira abandoned Swans for nearly 15 years, returning early in 2010 with the promising though tentative comeback LP, My Father Will Guide Me up a Rope to the Sky. A seemingly never-ending tour galvanized his regrouped crew, and they've since turned in two of the most colossal and demanding LPs of this decade, epitomized by last year's To Be Kind. These shows are at once beatings and baptisms by sound, jubilees meant to jar perceptions. Little Annie—the alluring singer and collaborator to the likes of Coil, Crass and Current 93—opens. 9 p.m., $18–$20, 300 E. Main St., Carrboro, 919-967-9053, www.catscradle.com.Grayson Haver Currin
