Susannah Cahalan

When: Sun., March 3, 4 p.m. 2013

Susannah Cahalan was 24, had a new job in journalism and a good relationship. One day, she woke up strapped down in a hospital room under guard with no memory of how she'd gotten there, and found out she'd been there a month. Her record showed a history of violence and instability, none of which she recalled. An offbeat doctor was finally able to diagnose her with a newly discovered autoimmune disease, a condition now thought to be the cause of so-called "demonic possessions" throughout history. Cahalan's doing all right now—she even wrote a book about her experience, Brain on Fire: My Month of Madness. —Zack Smith
