Susan Cooper

When: Wed., Sept. 4, 7 p.m. 2013
Before Harry Potter there was The Dark is Rising, British author Susan Cooper's tale of young children called into battle against the forces of evil. Drawing heavily from Arthurian mythology, the series of five novels won a number of awards, including the Newbery Medal for The Grey King, the fourth installment. Those books have remained some of the most influential children's fantasy novels of the last several decades (but please ignore The Seeker, the 2007 film version, which Cooper has disowned).

Cooper's diverse bibliography includes co-writing the Appalachian play Foxfire and the TV-movie adaptation of the novel The Dollmaker with Hume Cronyn, whom she later married. Now she's turned to historical fiction with Ghost Hawk, the tale of the friendship between a New England settler and a Native American boy. If you grew up reading Cooper's work—or if your kids are discovering it themselves—check out this reading and signing as well as our interview with her on the Artery blog at —Zack Smith
