Astro Coast, the 2010 debut from Florida dudes Surfer Blood, suggested that we had our new Weezer. Its bright, shout-along singles recalled the radical incandescence of early Rivers Cuomo, with the attitude of frontman John Paul Pitts lifted by songs that wouldn't quit spinning in your head long after the music had stopped. Pythons, their major-label debut, arrived this summer, after three years and a domestic battery controversy for Pitts. As with Weezer's Pinkerton, it's a follow-up haunted by its own darkness, though Pitts and his band attempt to hide their troubles with music that doesn't fit the mood. The guitars still ring loud and clear, though, backing the band's newfound darkness with enjoyable bombast, at least. —Grayson Currin
