Surfer Blood, Eternal Summers

The best you might be able to say about Florida-turned-California rock band Surfer Blood is that they’re persistent. After becoming a buzz band for the 2009 Weezer-like guitar hanger “Swim,” they signed to a major label to record an album that finally arrived last year. The delay was due not only to a change in imprints and producers but also for domestic charges filed against frontman John Paul Pitts, who has subsequently and simultaneously played both the I-didn’t-do-it and no-charges-were-filed cards. Suspicion of guilt and moral judgments aside, that record, Pythons, sounds exactly like what you’d expect from a one-jam bro band going for broke—big, dumb anthems with a feigned tender heart. It’s radio bait that no one’s taking, a product with a ticking time bomb for a shelf life. —Grayson Haver Currin
