Raleigh
Reckless Kelly, Cross Canadian Ragweed

Lincoln Theatre—Texas Red Dirt is slowly creeping east, expanding beyond its Texas-Oklahoma nexus. Though it's hard to define musically, because bands cross the spectrum, think Texas country at the base, with strong rock or pop influences as well. In Reckless Kelly's case, you hear the echo of '70s and '80s heartland rockers like Bob Seger and John Mellencamp. What unites them with their TRD brethren—beyond camaraderie—is a down-home, blue-collar lyrical perspective that's not necessarily conservative. Cross Canadian Ragweed are Red Dirt avatars whose hippie country roots-rock has developed a significant following, thanks to boisterous live shows. Get down for $20 in advance or $25 at 8 p.m. See www.lincolntheatre.com. —Chris Parker

Raleigh
Gabriel Iglesias

Meymandi Concert Hall, Progress Energy Center—Mexican-American comic Gabriel Iglesias jokes that there are ascending levels of fat: "big," "healthy," "husky," "fluffy" and "DAMN!" He's recently added "Aw, Hell Naw!" as the sixth. If that super-sized, drive-through humor doesn't have you rolling in the aisles on your love handles, surely his assertion that his girlfriend cooing the words "chocolate cake" over the phone is better than phone sex will do the trick. As a self-proclaimed "fluffy" man, Iglesias wins over audiences by combining a theatrical style of storytelling with a flair for mimicking accents. The Meymandi stage groans under his comedic weight for two sets tonight, at 7 and 9:30. Tickets are $33.50. Visit www.progressenergycenter.com. —Belem Destefani
