Summer Camp: A Celebration of George Kuchar

When: Wed., Aug. 13, 7:30 p.m. 2014
Price: Free
George Kuchar is the father of American camp. Every guilty pleasure you've had in front of a screen, every time you've chuckled "this is awful" but couldn't switch away—those are Kuchar moments. He had already spent half his life shooting grainy Super-8 shorts with his brother Mike when, at age 24 in 1966, he made the 15-minute solo film Hold Me While I'm Naked, a partially autobiographical mash-up of soft-core porn and Douglas Sirk's lavish Hollywood melodramas. Now considered a foundational underground filmmaker, Kuchar influenced the likes of John Waters and David Lynch with his diaristic narratives, garish coloration and unflinching inclusion of the banal—emphasis on the anal. In this installment of its new "Cinema Series," Mercury Studios screens Naked; We, the Normal; I, an Actress and Sins of the Fleshapoids (directed by Mike Kuchar). Grab some cotton candy and get sticky. —Chris Vitiello
