Sufjan Stevens, Moses Sumney

When: Thu., May 7, 7:30 p.m. 2015
Price: $40

A decade has passed since Sufjan Stevens issued Illinois, his second and for-now-final grandiose reflection on an American state. Stevens still gets chided for the long-ago intimation that he'd eventually get to all 50, an audacious proposal that might have consumed his whole career. Let's be glad it didn't: The new Carrie & Lowell—just his second proper, non-holiday album since Illinois—is one of the most tender and captivating autobiographical LPs you'll ever hear, a personal document no less compelling than the Mountain Goats' The Sunset Tree. Full of heart-cutting confessions about abandonment by his mother and the challenges it still presents to Stevens as a successful adult, its 11 tracks pull you into his woe and make you, like him, look for the bright spots in your own difficulties and hang-ups. It's a whisper of a record, Stevens' voice small and up close, as if he's telling you all this because he's grown to trust you. On stage, he'll have a chance to create a community of more than 2,700 confidants. With Moses Sumney. 7:30 p.m., $40, 123 Vivian St., Durham, 919-688-3722, —Grayson Haver Currin
